History

History provides valuable insights into the world we live in today. By understanding the past, our children can grasp how societies, cultures, and civilizations have evolved over time. This knowledge helps them make sense of current events and appreciate the significance of certain developments or issues.

At school, our history curriculum promotes critical thinking skills. Analysing historical events, causes, and consequences encourages pupils to examine evidence, evaluate different perspectives, and develop their own informed opinions.

By studying the experiences of different individuals and societies throughout history, children can develop an understanding of diverse perspectives and cultures. This fosters tolerance, respect, and an appreciation for the shared humanity of people from different backgrounds.

Areas covered by the curriculum include:

  • Ancient History: Pupils learn about the civilizations of ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome, China, and other influential societies.
  • Medieval History: This period covers the Middle Ages, including the Byzantine Empire, the Crusades, feudalism, and the Renaissance.
  • Early Modern History: Pupils delve into the Age of Exploration, the Protestant Reformation, the Scientific Revolution, and the Enlightenment.
  • Modern History: Topics may include the Industrial Revolution, the French Revolution, World Wars I and II, the Cold War, and decolonisation.
  • World History: Students gain a broader understanding of global history, including civilizations and events from various regions and time periods.
  • Historiography and Research Skills: Students learn about different historical perspectives, interpret primary and secondary sources, and develop critical thinking and research skills

Geography

Geography gives us a sense of place in the world.

As children become familiar with globes, maps and atlases, they appreciate both their local environment as well as their relation to the country and continent they inhabit, and the world beyond. Geography helps us to understand why settlements grew up where they did, how the world’s resources are accessed and transported, and what processes shape the world around us. Our approach emphasises human as well as physical geography and the study of the cultures, languages, arts and industries of the many and varied places on Earth.

Religious Education

Religious Education aims to enable pupils to develop an understanding of other cultures and lifestyles.

Pupils have an opportunity to explore stories and beliefs from a variety of religions, including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism.  Pupils also study Philosophy and ask ‘big’ questions in their weekly Mindful Mouse discussions.

The curriculum is delivered creatively by teachers using drama, discussions, debates, visits to places of worship and sessions with outside speakers.
